When CNN sprang from a small cable news channel in 1980, few thought that it would grow to become the world’s most influential news network. Instead, its critics dismissed its early success as a one-time occurrence, akin to a hot air balloon.
Today, there are more journalists working for CNN than there are at any other television news operation in the country. That’s a lot of talent for a small network.
Streaming video has allowed the news to become increasingly ubiquitous. It has reduced the cost of producing content, and it has allowed news networks to archive and replay programming in a timely manner. In addition to regular nightly news programs, major streaming networks also offer documentaries and reruns.
While the first wave of streaming networks was focused on the local news, the big fish in the sea have been the larger national news organizations. As the streaming era has progressed, the largest news organizations have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations.
The biggest winners are CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and NBC News. They earned a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020.
As streaming becomes more pervasive, the news industry is struggling to maintain relevance. One reason is that viewers want faster, more relevant news. Another is that they’re frustrated with low-quality, high-cost products and services.
Several of the newer players are looking to cut out the middleman and deliver news directly to their audiences. To achieve this goal, the networks have repurposed content from their cable counterparts, while also developing content specifically for the streaming audience.
