In television broadcasting, Breaking News is an announcement of an important event that is so significant that it warrants the interruption of current non-news programming or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts. The announcer may usually say, “Please stand by for breaking news.” When the news event is confirmed, network affiliates are instructed to interrupt their regular programming and switch over to a special feed from the network headquarters that will display an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. The graphic is often accompanied by a countdown sequence to give stations time to prepare for the interruption. Other terms for breaking news include Newsflash, special report and a variety of nicknames.
