In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is a report on urgent events that warrant immediate coverage. In the past, this was restricted to major events such as a presidential assassination or a major weather event, but with the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming may be interrupted for breaking stories even during regularly scheduled programs. When an event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, the network will inform all affiliated stations and tell them to stand by for a break in programming. Then the network feed will pause, and the station identification for that particular affiliate will be overlaid on top of the graphic as the news event unfolds.
