When news events occur that necessitate immediate coverage, broadcasters will interrupt their regular programming to break the story, with a graphic (often called a “Newsflash” or “Special report”) displayed on-screen. The network will often provide a countdown sequence to allow its affiliates to switch over to the breaking news feed. Depending on the nature of the news, the interruption may last only a few minutes or could be sustained for hours or even days. During this period, the usual lower thirds and station imaging promos will be replaced with breaking news graphics and an overlay of the network identification.
