In television and radio, breaking news is an interruption of non-news programs to announce urgent or ongoing events which require immediate coverage, such as severe weather or a national crisis. Breaking news is typically announced by a network-specific special graphic, with a distinctive music cue and a countdown sequence which allows local affiliates to join the feed. In recent years, many stations have started using a special ticker to show certain breaking stories during regular scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
