Often, when a news story is breaking, news stations use the term “breaking news.” This terminology is also used interchangeably with the term “late-breaking news.” It is a term used to describe the latest story of interest to viewers.

When a news story breaks, the network will stop the regular program and begin coverage. This coverage may last several minutes, hours, or even days. If the coverage is extensive, the network may suspend commercial advertising for sustained coverage. The network may also integrate analysis of the story. In some cases, the network will cut to a video of the breaking event.

Network talent will then remind viewers that more information will be provided on local news. The network may also pause for a few seconds to reset the coverage. This is sometimes called a “special report,” which is a common format.

When a story breaks, the anchor will introduce the news. Networks will often feature music or a graphic to emphasize the importance of the news. The network may also change the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency.

The network may also continue to show a live shot of the anchor. When the coverage ends, the network may begin to replay the previous programming. The network may also start new programming at this point.

The network may also provide a reverse countdown. Typically, the reverse countdown is a five-second countdown. The network may also roll the opening graphic again.
