Current News is the name for a segment during which a breaking news story is broadcast live. Breaking news is a term used to describe events of such significance that they require interruptions in regular non-news programming (or even in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). Prior to the existence of 24-hour news channels, national television and radio stations usually only interrupted programming for very serious news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather, and would typically announce the news with a special graphic or alert crawl overlaid during the program.
