When breaking news occurs, non-news programs on national networks usually interrupt their regular programming with a special “Newsflash” or “Special report.” These reports often feature a distinctive graphic and music cue, and may last for a few minutes or continue for several hours or days as the story develops. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were limited to events deemed especially urgent, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
