When a breaking news event occurs that warrants immediate and national coverage, TV and radio stations may interrupt their current non-news programming, or if the story is a major national news event (such as a natural disaster), even regularly scheduled and live network newscasts. The newscast will typically pause for a countdown to let network affiliates know that the network’s feed is about to be interrupted, and will then be replaced with a special graphic and a distinctive music cue that signals an emergency break in regular programming. The breaking news report will usually include a news anchor who welcomes viewers to the coverage and introduces the current story being covered.
