Streaming news is an emerging news delivery system that looks just like conventional TV. It allows viewers to watch news on their computers or mobile devices, no matter where they are. In addition to delivering current news, the major streaming networks provide news analysis, reruns, and documentaries.
Major news networks are investing hundreds of millions of dollars to serve the streaming audience. They also plan to provide more programming. For instance, CBS News Internet Ventures plans to launch a new channel, CASE xChange, in the coming year. It will be an alternate outlet for programming.
The premise behind streaming news is simple: it arrives on demand. A streamer is essentially telling viewers that they can cut their cable subscription and see cable-quality news for free. This means that networks are not bound by expensive negotiations with cable companies.
Major news networks hope that their streaming operations will nab the largest portion of the American TV audience. NBC News now offers 31 million hours of programming a month. Fox has a streaming app with 1.5 million subscribers. CNN, MSNBC, and Fox have earned a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020.
Streaming news is a relatively new development, but long-gestating cultural trends are combining to give it an edge. The new era of streaming news is set to disrupt the media landscape, and it will do so in a variety of ways.
One of the major streaming networks, CNN+, features four-and-a-half-minute ad blocks. The network also offers a digital subscription that includes six country-specific supplements. The ad blocks are intended to help a viewer find the programming that they’re interested in.
