Trending is a term for breaking news, a significant and rapidly developing story that warrants an interruption of non-news programming (or even scheduled newscasts). If the event is severe enough, stations may interrupt their regular program with a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker (see Newsflash and Special report). Usually, a countdown will occur on national network affiliates to alert them that the network’s feed is about to begin. Depending on the seriousness of the event, this coverage can last for hours or days. In the past, this type of interruption was typically reserved for incredibly urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
