Breaking news is breaking information about a developing story that requires immediate coverage, or an urgent event such as a severe weather situation. Typically, the breaking news will interrupt non-news programming (or in the case of national network broadcasts, an ongoing newscast). A countdown sequence is used, usually with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue. In the past, such interruptions were restricted to very serious events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, that required nationwide coverage, which necessitated stations to interrupt their regular programming.
