When a news event occurs that warrants the interruption of normal non-news programming (or, in some cases, even regularly scheduled newscasts), it is reported in breaking news. If a national network is currently airing a newscast at the time of the breaking event, a countdown sequence will often be displayed to allow affiliates to switch to the network feed and start reporting on the story. Breaking news reports are also referred to as “Newsflash” and occasionally as special report. Breaking news has been especially prominent in the days of 24-hour news networks, which have anchors on duty ready to interrupt programming at a moment’s notice.
