About Trending
Breaking news is a type of news story that is breaking in real time and requires immediate coverage. Traditionally, such stories are interrupted on a network’s regular non-news programs and occasionally also interrupt a regularly scheduled newscast (especially if the event warrants national coverage). In those cases, the station will usually first have a countdown graphic and a special music cue before switching to its news feed. Often, the news network will have an anchor available to do a live report, which eliminates the need for cut-ins or alert crawls. This practice was most common in North America before the emergence of 24-hour news networks.
