Breaking news is a term used to describe an event that requires the immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled live newscasts). It is also commonly used for events that demand nationwide coverage and require multiple stations to interrupt their respective broadcasts. Historically, this type of breaking news coverage was limited to extreme emergencies such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and the onset of severe weather events that required widespread national and local disruptions. More recently, 24-hour news networks have employed special tickers for selected breaking stories throughout the day, reducing the need for cut-ins to regular programing.
