When a breaking news event occurs that is of sufficient importance to interrupt regular programming (or, at least, a national network’s regularly scheduled newscast), the network will alert its affiliates and ask them to “stand by” while it switches to a special report. The resulting break is often accompanied by a special graphics package and distinctive music cue. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were normally reserved for highly urgent matters, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their own programming for the news.
