In North America, a breaking news report is an interruption of regular non-news programming to convey urgent, time-critical information. Such reports may be used by radio and television stations, or by 24-hour news networks (such as CNN). Before the existence of 24-hour news channels, interrupting regular programming was reserved for extremely severe or time-critical events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage requiring multiple station interruptions. Since then, news breaks have become commonplace, especially on major networks with a permanent anchor available for live reports. Breaking news can also be communicated through lower thirds or special graphic overlays during regularly scheduled programing, lessening the need for an entire newscast interruption.
