Breaking news is the term used for events that warrant an interruption in non-news programming and, if it’s a national event, a network’s regularly scheduled newscast. Generally, an alert will be issued that will tell affiliates to stand by while the network breaks the news. Then, a countdown sequence will be displayed to give stations time to switch over and join the live feed. The anchor will then come on-air and introduce the story at hand, usually with an appropriate music cue. When a breaking news event is occurring, a special ticker may also be overlaid on the lower thirds of the screen to convey urgency. These types of breaks are commonly seen on 24-hour news networks. They are also used by many local television and radio stations as cut-ins during regular programming or weather alert crawls during severe weather conditions.
