You’ve heard of Breaking News or Late-breaking News. But what exactly is this term and what does it mean? While most news organizations use the term to describe the latest news, it also refers to any story that is currently happening and of great interest to viewers. Some call breaking news “just in” while others use the term to describe no news. Regardless of the use, breaking news is a useful term to know about. The following are some definitions of the term.
The name Current News describes a variety of television broadcasts that occur on a regular basis. The newscaster may be an anchor on a network channel, while local stations may air the story as it breaks. In some cases, they may even switch to an auxiliary digital subchannel and air it in conjunction with the main signal. If there is a breaking story, the network will continue showing the live shot of the anchor, while local channels may move the story to a live reporter on the ground.
Breaking news is sometimes interrupted by television programs, especially prime time. The newscast may interrupt popular programming, new episodes, or highly-rated shows with only a few minutes to air. In the case of ABC, the recent Shayrat missile strike interrupted an episode of Scandal. The program was later rebroadcast without the interruption. The newscaster can even inform viewers that there will be future interruptions during the show. If an unexpected event arises, the newscaster can use special topical graphics.
