A news event that has gained popularity among viewers and requires a network or station to interrupt non-news programming, such as sports or other talk shows, for live coverage. Often, the national network will ask its affiliates to stand by and will then cut into a countdown sequence on the screen (as well as overlaid on other graphics) before beginning the live report, which may be accompanied by a distinctive music cue or lower thirds that convey the urgency of the news story. Breaking news is more common at 24-hour news networks that can interrupt their programming at will and that have anchors available to provide live analysis on the story.
