When an urgent news event occurs, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the occurrence of a natural disaster or other catastrophe, or an unfolding crime story, broadcasters interrupt their regularly scheduled programs to break the news. This is usually done with an audio announcement, a countdown sequence (if the program being interrupted is a network newscast), and a distinctively graphic newsflash or special report opening. The use of this type of coverage was common for breaking stories before the advent of 24-hour news networks, but is now also commonly used on the regular programming of some cable and satellite channels.
