How to Report Breaking News
When covering a breaking news story, it’s important to get it right. Many reporters rush to the scene of an event because they want to be the first to tell their audience what’s going on, but that can lead to mistakes. For instance, NPR erroneously reported that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords had died when in fact she was hospitalized. Never rely on panicked eyewitness accounts or speculation, and always do your own first hand reporting. Those are the two most important things that you can do to report the truth and give your readers the best possible information.
