Breaking news is a broadcast network or station program interruption during regular non-news programming, such as a sports event or talk show. When a breaking story occurs that requires immediate, ongoing coverage (such as severe weather or other natural disasters), network feeds will often interrupt the regular programming with a countdown sequence. This will typically be followed by a graphic and distinctive music cue, and the emergence of a news anchor or reporter to introduce the story at hand. This is also known as a newsflash or special report. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were typically reserved for extremely urgent and important stories, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
