When an event occurs that demands immediate attention, newscasts on local television and radio stations may interrupt current non-news programming with a “special report” or a “breaking news” alert. The special reports are often accompanied by a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to switch to the national feed of the newscast. The newscast will then pause, and the network’s anchor(s) will welcome viewers to the special report. This type of interruption is commonplace at 24-hour news networks, which keep an anchor on-call to interrupt regular programming in the event of urgent breaking news. It is less common at conventional broadcasters, who tend to use lower thirds or other graphics to convey an urgency to the breaking story without an actual newscast interruption.
