When a news event occurs that warrants an interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts), the national network will generally alert its affiliates and tell them to stand by. A countdown sequence may be used to give affiliated stations time to switch to the network feed. Once the network breaks into breaking news coverage, a ticker is often placed at the top of the screen to show that regular programing has been interrupted and to provide live updates on the story at hand. The news ticker is often color-coded to convey a sense of urgency, and lower thirds or other graphics may also be altered to convey the nature of the report.
