Trending is the term used to describe the top stories currently grabbing attention. A story that is Trending may be a breaking news event or one which has gained public interest and media coverage in the past few days. Trending stories are also often featured on the front page of a website, and many times they will have an accompanying article with more in-depth information about the story.
Breaking news
A breaking news story is an event which requires a television or radio station to interrupt regular programming to provide live, ongoing coverage. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were generally reserved for events which demanded nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or major weather events which would require numerous stations to interrupt normal, long-form, regionally produced coverage.
When a breaking news event occurs, network affiliates will typically be alerted to expect an interruption by a countdown sequence which begins during the current non-news programming or regular newscast being broadcast. This is usually followed by a graphic or crawl which informs the viewer that a live broadcast will be underway.
