When a breaking news event occurs that warrants interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, the regular news program), the network will alert its affiliates to stand by and then interrupt their own programming with a special break. The break usually begins with a graphic overlaid with a distinctive music cue and a countdown sequence, to allow affiliates time to switch over to the network feed.
