Breaking news is a term used to describe an event that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). Typically, breaking news events will trigger a countdown sequence on national networks to allow affiliate stations to switch to the network feed. A special alert graphic may be inserted, and lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey urgency.
