Breaking news is an urgent news event that requires an immediate interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, regular ongoing coverage). When such a story occurs, the broadcaster usually starts a countdown sequence to give affiliated stations time to switch over to the network feed. Then, the regular program is interrupted by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue, accompanied by the word “Breaking” or “Special Report”.
