Breaking news is a television and radio broadcasting event which requires the interruption of non-news programming (or, in rare cases, of regularly scheduled newscasts) to cover a story with an urgency that warrants nationwide coverage. When such an event occurs, networks will usually announce that a breaking news report is imminent and will ask all affiliates to stand by to switch over to the network feed. Stations may then open to a special graphic and use distinctive music cues, or alter lower thirds and other graphics, to convey the urgency of the report.
