While many news organizations still depend on a traditional broadcast model to reach audiences, the trend toward streaming news has proven to be a powerful new medium. Streaming news networks such as Fox Nation are attracting mass and niche audiences. In fact, more households are already subscribing to streaming services.

While many of these new services aren’t free, the streaming executives at major networks are hopeful about the future of the medium. Some have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. According to the co-president of CBS News, Wendy McMahon, the network is already seeing results. Fox, for example, has 1.5 million subscribers to its new streaming app Fox Nation. NBC News Now boasts more than 31 million viewers each month.

While there have been some criticisms of the ‘cable’ model, the rapid adoption of streaming video content demonstrates the pent-up demand for quality, affordable alternatives. According to Bharat Anand, a business guru, frustrated consumers create kindling for innovators. For news companies, this means the ability to provide a wide array of options to viewers who may want to check out new content without a monthly subscription.

Another local news item from last month involves a woman who died tragically in an automobile accident. Her name is Emily Allen and she was killed in a collision. She is a graduate of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
