If you are a news watcher, you probably spend a fair amount of time on your computer, mobile device, or other streamer. In fact, over the past decade, the amount of time spent on streaming programs has exceeded that of broadcast TV.
Streaming provides viewers with the freedom to select the news they want. They can select specific topics or blocks, watch reruns, or express their opinions. These tools can be particularly useful for commercial-averse viewers, who may not want to pay for cable news.
As a result, the major news networks have made hundreds of millions of dollars in investments in streaming operations. Their hope is that these services will attract new audiences. Streaming networks schedule regular nightly news shows and offer news analysis. But they also expect a number of new players to enter the market.
Historically, television news has been a profitable business. But it is also subject to a dwindling audience. For example, in 2021, only 56 percent of Americans had a TV subscription. That is a drop of 76% from the previous year.
One explanation for this decline is the proliferation of news services. Increasingly, viewers are choosing to pay for content on the Internet. The competition is bringing new players into the market. Some are aiming to replicate the success of cable’s approach.
Others are looking to democratize television news by giving it away for free. This is essentially a way to tell viewers they can cut their cable subscription.
