About Trending

Breaking news is news that occurs so urgently that non-news programming, such as regular television or radio broadcasts, must be interrupted. This is usually done through a countdown sequence and a special open (or “flash” or “newsflash”) graphic, and may also involve a distinct music cue, lower thirds, or other graphics that are altered to convey the sense of urgency. Occasionally, breaking news events can cause a network’s regular evening newscast to pause for the duration of the story; this is more common on 24-hour news networks that have anchors available to immediately interrupt programming when necessary. This was the case for example, with the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the resulting national coverage of the event.
