Current News is the name for a television or radio program devoted to breaking news and current events. It can take several forms depending on the story being covered, including a news report, an event overview or a feature story.

Breaking News

The term breaking news is most often applied to extremely important or critical news that requires the utmost attention from broadcasters and their audiences, such as an accident or terrorist attack. It can also be applied to less significant but still timely events, such as the release of a top secret document, an election or even a sporting event.

Coverage of breaking news may last only a few minutes, or continue for multiple hours or days at a time. Usually, the coverage includes a brief news report and may be accompanied by footage or imagery of the events being reported on.

Special report

The phrase “special report” or similar terminology is sometimes used to describe a news story that is too large or complex for regular programming to handle (such as the assassination of President Kennedy), and may include special features, such as interviews with experts, archival footage, or a live shot of an event. It can also be a title for a television program or a web series that provides in-depth reporting and analysis on a topic of high interest to the public.

Media Technology

On television, breaking news is usually introduced by an opening graphic and music such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” (composed by John Williams) which conveys the importance of the occasion, as well as a countdown to the beginning of the network newscast. Local stations are given the opportunity to cut away from the network feed and start their own newscasts if the story has been big enough, but typically they will not provide the countdown or use graphics of their own in this case.
