In the past few years, the news landscape has changed dramatically. Cable TV has essentially surpassed broadcast news. Streaming video is likely to reshape political coverage as well. Streaming also enables viewers to watch at their own pace. Commercial-averse viewers may opt to skip over cable and switch to an online video service.
The advent of streaming has fueled a host of new news operations. For instance, Cheddar, Newsmax, and Bloomberg have planted flags in the streaming frontier.
The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. However, they have been reluctant to overhype the benefits of streaming.
The proliferation of choices could drive polarization among viewers. Streaming is also likely to encourage new overtly political operations.
In addition, free news streamers are pushing the quality of cable-quality news. While some cable news channels are aiming to compete with free news services, others are simply promoting cable-quality news.
For instance, CBS’s aggressive local news strategy includes a commitment to delivering 45,000 hours of local news in 2022. This includes streaming news and reruns.
Similarly, Fox has a streaming app called Fox Nation. It has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. Aside from news, viewers can also catch up on documentaries, reruns, and documentaries.
NBC has a 10-hour daily programming block. And POLITICO covers national politics and lobbying. Other news organizations include Inside U.S. Trade, which offers daily international trade news. These news organizations are able to deliver their content to the audience by posting the articles on their website and by distributing them through their newsletters.
