Television news has been on the airwaves for decades. In that time, it has been a profitable business for broadcasters. But as the internet became more widely accessible, a new way of viewing information emerged.
Streaming news is similar to conventional TV. However, there are several differences. It arrives on demand, and it travels wherever the viewer is. This makes it convenient for consumers. Moreover, it reduces the scarcity in the media equation.
As a result, streaming news is becoming more and more popular. Major news networks have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into their streaming operations, and they are hoping to reap the benefits.
In fact, the three largest news operations – CNN, Fox, and MSNBC – earned a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020. If online video streaming does in fact change how we cover political news, it will be a huge boon for the industry.
The influx of new information may encourage voters to become more politically polarized. At the same time, it could help create an audience for more partisan news operations. That’s not to say that the streamers aren’t commercially aware – they’re trying to nudge viewers to cut their cable subscriptions.
But there are also some free news streamers that are attempting to promote cable-quality news. The result is a network that looks and feels like cable. For instance, NewsBreak provides local news. Users can express their opinions and follow trending topics. Similarly, Jackson has episodes that are twice as long as the average nightly news report.
