Trending is a segment of Current News that talks about what’s popular, or what people are talking about on social media. This is usually accompanied by a graphic and a special music cue. Unlike breaking news (or its variants, “Newsflash” and “Special report”), this is not an interruption of non-news programming, but rather a stand-alone piece that may last minutes, hours, or even days. Before 24-hour news networks existed, such breaks were reserved for exceptionally urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted stations across the country to interrupt their regular programming with live coverage.
