Breaking news is a term used by television networks to indicate that an important current event requires their coverage to be interrupted from non-news programming, in order for the network affiliates to broadcast the breaking story in its entirety. Generally, the program is halted with a special graphic that informs viewers of the nature of the event, with a music cue to emphasize the importance of the story. Historically, such interruptions have only been used for events of major national interest, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and are also not typically used for weather events, which may be reported on through a simple cut-in or alert crawl during regular programming.
