If a news event is breaking so urgently that it requires an immediate interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, their regularly scheduled newscast), a newsflash or special report is broadcast. A typical breaking news graphic is displayed, usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue or lower thirds. Often the break will be preceded by a countdown sequence on the network feed, allowing affiliates to interrupt their own programs and switch to the network feed for the report. This is particularly common on 24-hour news networks. Prior to the advent of these stations, break-ins were reserved for extremely important events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or major severe weather events.
