Breaking news is a term used by television and radio stations for current events that are breaking, which usually require them to interrupt regular programming in order to report the information. When a story is deemed to be of such importance that it warrants an interruption of the network’s regular programming, the affiliates will be notified through the use of a special graphic or countdown sequence asking viewers to stand by and watch a breaking news report. The interruption may only last a few minutes, or it could continue for hours or even days. Depending on the story, special graphic overlays and lower thirds are typically used to convey a sense of urgency.
