The term “breaking news” refers to an issue that is of interest to a large number of people and warrants interruption of regular programming for an extended period of time to cover it in detail. This coverage typically lasts for hours, or in some cases for days (in the case of an event that extends to a week or more).
Breaking news can occur on the radio, cable TV and Internet platforms. On television, a story will be announced via an opening graphic and an introduction from a news anchor, followed by a countdown or other signal to inform affiliate stations that the network is on a breaking news event.
After the newscast is interrupted, the broadcaster will then disseminate information to the station’s master control to allow for continued coverage (such as announcing that the broadcast will be joined in-progress or resumed at the point of interruption). This may be done through an internal alert system for a network, or by teleconferencing with affiliates to inform them of the breaking news event.
Breaking news is often assigned to events that require immediate coverage, such as the death of a major political figure or a severe weather event. However, it may be applied to less urgent and more mundane events that do not need continuous coverage but are still of interest to a wide audience.
