Trending is a term used for breaking news events that are currently receiving extensive coverage in the media. In a television broadcast, this may result in an abrupt break of current non-news programming or, with 24-hour news networks, during regular newscasts, and is usually accompanied by a special graphic indicating the event is taking place and a countdown to begin coverage. It may also involve a change in lower thirds or other graphics to convey urgency. Depending on the nature of the news event, this report may last only minutes or continue for hours or days.
