Streaming has made television news more accessible and ubiquitous. With over 85 percent of households in the U.S. subscribing to at least one streaming service, news can be viewed anytime, anywhere.
Streaming news combines news reporting, news analysis, and documentaries in one customizable package. Streaming executives have not gotten carried away with the hype. They have a keen sense of the audience’s needs and the technological advantage in serving it. Streaming news arrives when viewers ask for it.
News reports can last hours or days. Local stations may break away from the network feed to report on a breaking story. When coverage ends, the network may continue to show the anchor’s live shot or return to programming.
During coverage, the reporter may pass on more information as the story breaks. At the end of the report, a disclaimer may indicate that more information can be found on the network’s website or in a local station’s newscast.
Breaking news may take place during prime time. It may also interrupt the programming of an overnight news program. For instance, NBC’s coverage of the September 11 attacks occurred between September 11-15, 2001. During the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, CBS’s Walter Cronkite provided coverage.
Breaking news can also refer to stories that are more old-fashioned. These are usually reported quickly, because the information available at the time is sketchy. If the information is not complete, it can be problematic later when researching the topic.
