A breaking news report is an urgent television or radio segment of a story that has occurred recently, is ongoing, or may be developing. These reports are typically delivered through network feeds to local affiliate stations, who then present the information through on-air anchors and/or studio analysts via satellite, phone (B-GAN) or other means. If the news event is severe enough, regular commercial advertising may be interrupted for sustained coverage, and network affiliates will be required to identify themselves on-air as a result, often through a top-of-hour graphic or station imaging promo rather than through their usual program or ident.

Previously, when a breaking news story warranted the interruption of regularly scheduled programming on TV and radio, networks would air a “Newsflash” or a special ticker during the break. In the case of a large event such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, this was done on an unprecedented scale that prompted many stations to suspend their programs. In recent years, 24-hour news channels have begun to use special graphics and a special alert crawl during normal programming to convey breaking stories, lessening the need for cut-ins or the need to interrupt regular broadcasts.
