When a news event occurs that is so important it requires immediate nationwide coverage and thereby forces the interruption of non-news programming (or even regularly scheduled network newscasts), a special breaking news report, sometimes called a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”, is usually presented. In the case of national network newscasts, a countdown sequence is displayed to alert affiliate stations to switch to the national feed and join in live. Depending on the seriousness of the event, the news report may last for a few minutes or hours or more. Newsflashes, and more recently “Special Report” tickers, have also been used to break major stories during regular programming, lessening the need for cut-ins and alert crawls.
