A breaking news story is a news event that requires an immediate, urgent and widespread response, or one which must be covered by multiple broadcasters in order to reach the maximum number of viewers. Breaking news events usually require an interruption of regular non-news programming or, in the case of a national network, a pause or countdown on the network feed so that affiliate stations can switch to the newscast.
Breaking news is a type of report commonly found on 24-hour news networks, which have anchors available for live interruption at any time and often use special lower thirds or tickers for breaking stories to reduce the need for cut-ins. Breaking news is also commonly used in North America by radio and television weather reports for extreme, ongoing severe weather events such as tornadoes or landfalling hurricanes, which typically require a full interruption of current programming to provide detailed coverage.
