But it also presents challenges: The competition to be the first to break a story is often fierce, and the stories are typically chaotic and confusing. This makes it easy to make mistakes. Reporters in a hurry to get their stories out sometimes make assumptions based on eyewitness accounts, for example. This could result in a report like the one that NPR made about Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, which later turned out to be wrong. Instead, reporters should confirm their reports with authorities and get first-hand information from sources. This is more reliable than relying on eyewitness accounts that may or may not be accurate.
