In today’s digital journalism age, breaking news is an essential part of the news cycle. Streaming television and other news streams allow viewers to customize their news experience. They are also able to express themselves and their opinions.
Breaking news reports can sometimes be misleading. Ideally, the news should be verified by eyewitness accounts. Otherwise, it should not be displayed as Breaking News. Rather, it may be called a Special Report or News Flash.
Streaming allows viewers to view current events from anywhere. It also gives newscasters an opportunity to archive content. This creates a cost-effective way to build news libraries. The news channels that are vying for audiences can take advantage of this.
When the Internet was in its infancy, the major cable networks dominated the media landscape. CNN, Fox, and MSNBC made a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020. These networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.
In the streaming frontier, Newsy, Cheddar, and Newsmax have planted flags. Those networks repurpose existing cable programming and chase breaking news. Similarly, Bloomberg has entered the online video streaming market.
Online video streaming is likely to change the landscape of political news coverage. Previously, it was largely limited to news outlets like ABC, CBS, and NBC. However, new players, like One America News and Fox News Channel, are likely to enter the online market.
Free news streamers are essentially telling viewers that they can cut their cable subscriptions. This could create a polarizing effect.
