Breaking news is a news story that is so important that it requires interruption of non-news programming, or in the case of a network newscast, its regular programing. The breaking news is typically followed by a brief “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker graphic and a special opening sequence, often with a dramatic music cue, that alerts viewers to the importance of the event. In the past, this kind of breaking news was usually reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted many television and radio stations to interrupt their regular broadcasts in order to air the report. Currently, breaking news is more frequently interrupted for in-depth coverage, such as a special live event or natural disaster.
