Breaking News is an announcement of urgent news events that require immediate coverage, such as a sudden death of a well-known person or the threat of severe weather conditions. Traditionally, breaking news was only accompanied by an interruption of non-news programming (or, before 24-hour network news stations, regularly scheduled newscasts) and a special graphic with a distinctive music cue, called a newsflash or a special report. During the event, station identification is usually overlaid on lower thirds or other graphics, and regular commercial advertising may be suspended for sustained coverage.
